Bernie Sanders touches on climate change, student debt in Vegas rally
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Senator Bernie Sanders made another stop Saturday in Las Vegas - this time to rally supporters on the two pressing campaign issues of climate change and student loan debt.
Loud cheers greeted Senator Sanders at the Cambridge Recreation Center as he made his second stop of the day campaigning to be the Democratic nominee for president in Southern Nevada.
"He's been running around town, doing huge rallies...and his vocal cords are a little worn out," Liz Margin, a Bernie supporter, said.
The senator's voice still carried well enough to greet supporters and call out President Trump on climate change at his rally.
"It might be a good idea to listen to the scientists and not Donald Trump," Sanders said to cheers.
He touched on student loan debt, pointing out a supporter who owed $110,000. For Pamela Orr, it's an issue that hits home, saying she supports the senator's plan to eliminate all student loan debt.
"With the student loans, that's just a ridiculous amount for all of us to be in debt to get an education that we need to survive. It's ridiculous," Orr said.
Sanders also re-affirmed his support for the Green New Deal, saying climate change made recent natural disasters more intense.
"We have seen the devastation done to Puerto Rico, We have just seen last week the incredible devastation done the Bahamas," Sanders said.
It's a message that resonated with supporters in the room.
"I think nobody has their finger on the pulse of what's happening and the intensity that we need to move forward with solutions for climate change," Margin said.
